Holt Wins Mid-States' Wick Cup Championship Over Duchesne

Sophomore forward Corbin Foppe scored with just 49 seconds remaining in the game to give the Holt Indians a 4-3 win over Duchesne in the Mid States Wickenheiser Cup championship game.

It’s been an up and down season for the Wentzville Holt High School hockey team, but the Indians made it count late in the season and rode a hot streak all the way to their second Wickenheiser Cup championship in three years.

Sophomore sensation Corbin Foppe scored the game-winning goal with just 49.5 seconds remaining in the game. Foppe's second goal of the game broke a 3-3 tie that had stood since 10 seconds into the second period.

Foppe took a long pass from Holt senior forward Austin Mossengren right on his tape before rushing in all alone on the left side and sneaking a wriste shot short side on Duchesne goalie Ted Bunton for the go-ahead goal.

Just seconds later, the Indians were raising Mid-States High School Hockey League hardware at center ice of the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis.

The win gave Holt its second Wickenheiser Cup championship in three years—the Indians defeated Rockwood Summit in 2011.

Holt wasn't the best team during the regular season—the Indians even had a losing division record at the end of the 2012-13 season—but it found ways to win games when it mattered most.

"It's been a roller coaster season but we played as a team and as a unit and it paid off for us," said Indian head coach Larry Sadowski.

Sadowski said he considering resting his top two lines as the two St. Charles County teams appeared destined for overtime.

"That's always the tough decision when preparing for overtime. Do you rest your top guys to keep them fresh?" he said after the game. "But we put them out there and it paid off."

Corbin, who led Holt with 21 goals during the regular season, was named the game's MVP. His first goal knotted the game at 2-2 with less than a minute remaining in the first period.

That goal was followed just seconds later by another Indians score, this one from Mossengren, which put Holt up 3-2 heading into the second period.

But Holt's lead wouldn't last long.

Just 11 seconds into the second period, Duchesne found the back of the net on a power play goal from senior defenseman Joseph Rupp. Rupp scored on a big-time slap shot from the center point and the game remained tied until Foppe's go-ahead goal.
