O'Fallon Police advised at 3:30 p.m. that I-70 westbound is shut down at mile marker 214 at Lake St. Louis all the way to Hwy 40/64. It may take two hours to clear.

At 3:40 p.m., MoDOT's traffic map indicated I-70 closed from exit 212 to Bryan Road, and I-64 from Hwy. 94 clear through West St. Louis county to I-270.

It's a mess out there.

Today's sleet, ice and snow have St. Charles County emergency crews and police departments strained to their limits.

Just listen to the scanner feed available at RadioReference.com for a few minutes, and it's immediately obvious that police have their hands full today. Just a few examples:

• Traffic backed up on I-70 from T.R. Hughes to Hwy. 79.
• Someone experiencing chest pains after shoveling snow.
• A truck and several cars stuck on the highway near Lake Saint Louis.
• A car stuck in the middle of the intersection on First Capital over I-70.
• An officer saying that he could see a problem on Hwy. N across from Saratoga. "I have to be on foot and walk up there to see what's going on."
• An officer saying, "I'm stuck. I can't respond anywhere."
• "Grand Teton and Mexico - it's almost impassable"
• Cadillac blocking traffic on Mid Rivers.

Patch called O'Fallon police to ask about a situation at Hwy. K and Bryan Road and was told by Officer Diana Damke that "it's a mess everywhere."
