New Lake Saint Louis Goodwill Store Set to Open

The new store is located at 913 Robert Raymond Drive in the Shoppes at Hawk Ridge.

MERS Goodwill was in the final stages of set-up for its opening day when Wentzville Patch visited Wednesday morning. The store's ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 8:45 a.m., and grand opening festivities will continue through Saturday. Store Manager Tori Basile expects the Lake Saint Louis location to be a "giving" store, with more donations coming in than can be sold at the site. "We're going to put out the best of the best," she said. Extra donations will be sent out to other local MERS Goodwill locations. The Hawk Ridge store, in the south end of the complex near Lowe's, features a drive-through bay. As cars drive up, a sensor alerts staff inside and the donations are brought inside and sorted. Clothing with holes or rips are …

Board Considers Rezoning for New Independent Living Development

The new development, Twin Oaks At Stone Ridge, will include land for a future senior center in Wentzville.

A new independent living development adjacent to Twin Oaks Senior Living Campus at Heritage Pointe would also offer a location for a senior center if approved. At last week's Wentzville board of aldermen meeting, the board gave a first reading to a bill allowing the rezoning of an 8-acre parcel on Santa Elena Drive, north of Wentzville Parkway. The site is currently zoned R-3B, multi-family residential. The developers are asking for a rezoning to PD-R, Planned Development Residential. A pedestrian walkway will connect the two developments, and tenants of the new development would be able to use the dining room at Twin Oaks at Heritage Point.

Do You Think Farmers' Markets Are 'Fresher'?

Local farmers’ market vendors say that the fruits and veggies they grow are superior to grocery store produce for many reasons.

Do you buy the freshest produce possible? According to many area farmers, the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store may not be as fresh as you think. With farmers' markets open now (or about to open) around the St. Louis area, including Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton, Ellisville, Wildwood, Arnold and elsewhere, we wanted to talk a little about what "fresh" means to you. Tim Hess, owner of Silent Oaks farm and a vendor at several area farmers’ markets, told Patch that most of the produce sold in local grocery stores comes from Calfornia or Florida, areas where many farms are staffed by migrant workers. “It’s a long trail and at the end of the trail you’ll find that migrant Mexican workers do …

The two greatest deterrents to lo locally grown produce and fruits are... 1. Convenience - everyone wants to have their needs met close to home, easily accessible and inexpensive 2. Instant Gratification - "I want it NOW, even though it is not in season I want it and should be able to have it!" Gone are the days of waiting for the peaches and tomatoes to ripen in the backyard! I personally would …   more ›

The Friday Food Critic

Friday Food Critic: Pete's Drive-In

Each week, we nominate a new restaurant for you to review. That's right, you're the local expert.

When it comes to restaurants, Wentzville has it covered. We have some great local places that many would consider community gems; we have some restaurants that aren't exactly mom-and-pop but are unique to the area; and we certainly—for better or for worse—have plenty of chains lining our main streets. But what we don't have is a consistent food critic to tell us what's good and what's not.  That's where you come in. We could throw some money at a professional food critic, but that's not exactly what Patch is all about. We'd much rather know the opinion of the fine folks that eat there day-in and day-out. It's your community. You eat the food. You tell us if it passes the mark. That's why we are introducing The Friday Food Critic column, …

The Wentzville Board of Aldermen have approved an agreement to provide financial assistance to Ranken Technical Collge in order to bring a satellite campus to Wentzville, and the first private partner has already come forward. A release issued today by Larry Tucker, the city's business development director states: During today’s Wentzville Downtown Business Association Meeting, Alderman Chris Guard made the announcement that the Wentzville Board of Aldermen had unanimously approved the amended cooperative agreement to help bring the first Ranken Technical College Satellite Campus to the City of Wentzville. Immediately upon hearing this news, Kurt Daniels, with Cochran Engineering stated that he and Cochran Engineering wanted to be the …

Lake Saint Louis Board of Aldermen To Consider Allowing Mobile Food Trucks

One mobile food truck already has permission from Lowe's to sell from the Lowe's parking lot.

The Lake Saint Louis Board of Aldermen have agreed to consider an ordinance to allow mobile food trucks and trailers in the city. If it passes, the first such trailer could be selling gourmet hot dogs in the Lowe's parking lot within two months. Assistant City Administrator Eric Sterman spoke to the Board of Aldermen Monday night about a request to allow a mobile food trailer in the city. Nothing in the current city code addressed the situation. Sterman said that rather than deal with the business individually, he thought it was time for the board to give it some thought. The owner of the concession trailer, Dan Kelly, said that the business would offer a variety of gourmet hot dogs, Italian sausages and three types of French fries. Lowe's…
