A complete look at the issues facing the city of Wentzville and the Wentzville R-IV School District on the April 5 ballot.
Wentzville voters on Tuesday elected to lengthen the term for the city's mayor, but kept terms for aldermen at two years. The Wentzville Board of Aldermen opted to put both questions before the voters after a vote in January. The change impacts the 2012 election cycle. The winner of the next mayoral election will serve a four-year term. Aldermen will continue to serve two-year terms. Voters kept both incumbent aldermen, but voted incumbent municipal judge Mike Carter out of office. Stephen Martin will replace Carter as the head of Wentzville's court. According to unofficial tallies from the …

Nick Guccione, a two-term alderman, is running unopposed for his third term as Ward 3 alderman in the City of Wentzville. Guccione has been in management and the customer service industry for over 30 years. He is currently a manager for Schnucks Markets. "To me, customer service is one of the most important roles of an alderman," Guccione said.  As part of his efforts to serve the people, Guccione and Alderwoman Cheryl Kross hold monthly meetings that are open to all Wentzville residents. The meetings are an informal opportunity to help citizens resolve any issues or concerns they may have…
Cheryl Kross, the incumbent Ward 1 alderman, is listening to the people. "That's what I focus on," she said. "We have the citizen survey. People told us want they want and I think we need to focus on those items." On that list of citizen priorities is improving traffic flow in the city and reducing congestion.  The people of Wentzville also want to see a reduction in vast number of vacant lots within the city.  "The city needs to partner with the homeowners associations and the homeowners  to work together to address their concerns," she said.  Kross said she just recently learned that in …
Bill Schuette, candidate for Ward 2 alderman, believes in standing up to special interest groups, supporting civic involvement, holding tight to strong building regulations and working to make Wentzville a stronger city overall. Schuette is a familiar face at City Hall. From 2006 to 2010 he served as an alderman in Ward 2, but he relinquished his seat during an unsuccessful bid for mayor in 2010. He said he is ready to get back to business, and return to the post of Ward 2 alderman. “I want to continue to serve as an alderman because I just want to do what’s right for the residents of the …
In addition to choosing candidates in the Tuesday, April 5 municipal election, voters will also be asked to choose how long officials should stay in office. If approved, the change would impact the 2012 election cycle. The Wentzville Board of Aldermen voted in January to ask voters for longer terms in office. The measure passed with a vote of 6-0.  The ordinance asks voters on the April ballot if the terms of Wentzville mayor and aldermen should be lengthened from two years to four year terms. Elections would be staggered, so that the entire board would not be up for election in the same …
When it comes to experience serving municipalities, Andrew Koor most likely ranks at the top. After graduating from Washington University School of Law in 1985, and being admitted to the Missouri Bar Association that next year, Koor hit the ground running. His experience began as assistant prosecuting attorney for Lincoln County (1986-1988). He has served as city attorney and prosecuting attorney for the City of Winfield. From 1994 to 1997 he served as prosecuting attorney in O’Fallon. He served as municipal judge in Foley (1989 to 1992), municipal judge in Old Monroe (1990-1997), municipal …
Chris Gard was going door-to-door campaigning for his election as Ward 2 alderman when an older gentleman said he’s watched the city change so much over the years he thought “the city has outgrown its city government.” “I’ve never heard anyone put it as succinctly as that,” Gard said. “I think we need a better plan for the next 10 than we’ve had for the last 10. When you start talking to folks, you get the feeling that we’ve been flying by the seat of our pants. We need to take a step back and figure out what we want to be when we grow up.” It’s been a decade since Gard and his family moved …
Donna Sherwood has tried to speak with every voter in her ward in her efforts to become Wentzville’s next Ward 2 alderman. It’s tiring work, she said, but it excites her to know that if she wins, she’ll be working to make the city a better place to live. Sherwood has been a resident of the Wentzville area since 1994. She has always followed state and local politics, but it wasn’t until 2006 that she was elected a Wentzville Township committee woman for the St. Charles County Republican Central Committee, she said. If elected as alderman of Ward 2, she said she’ll be a stalwart representative …
Ola Martin said she’s not a politician and hopes she will never be, despite her current campaign for Wentzville Ward 1 alderman. She calls herself a “citizen’s advocate” and has proven herself in that area. Martin, a retired social services supervisor, volunteers with the Wentzville Historical Society, an organization that works to preserve Wentzville history; serves as vice president of Wentzville Area Senior Services, Inc. (WASSI), an organization that helps direct seniors to needed services; is Music Chairman of the Tri-County Women’s Christian Association; is a member of the Choral Arts …
Stephen Martin, the former prosecuting attorney for the City of Kansas City, said he has a long list, as well as 25 years of experience, which make him the right candidate for the position as municipal judge in the City of Wentzville. He has served as an attorney representing police and sheriff’s departments in various municipalities, and he has a clear understanding of both the political and judicial system. His experience as an attorney spans the gamut, including government contracts, real estate law, eminent domain, land use and zoning, along with state, and local and municipal law. He has…
Incumbent Wentzville judge Michael E. Carter, seeking a second two-year term in the April 5 election, believes a judge should be aware of the community’s needs. "I have a lot of ideas about what a judge means to a community," he said. "I did a thesis on it in law school, trying to have a throwback to Mayberry times, where a municipal judge is more community-oriented, focuses on outreach, and being part of the community instead of some isolated person that no one ever talks with or to. Talking in schools, just really trying to change what it means to be a municipal judge. I’ve been putting the…
Voters will soon be heading to the polls to vote for municipal officials in the city of Wentzville. But what does the city council do? Before voting, make sure you are informed about candidates' views, policies, and what their job will be if elected. The city of Wentzville has a council-administrator form of government as set forth in Chapter 77 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. The mayor and the aldermen exist to provide leadership and make major decisions within the city, as stated on the city's website. The mayor presides over meetings of the board of aldermen and votes only in the case…
