Aging in Place

Do you plan to stay in your home as you age? I have some good tips on what you will need to make sure that happens.

Where do you want to age?

It seems like an odd question—after all we age wherever we are, but more and more people are taking an active role in deciding where (and how) they will age.

I for one am choosing to age in place, in my place—my house of 20 years where I raised my children and where I made my home. In order to make this seemingly simple choice a reality however, it will take foresight and planning.

If you are planning on staying in your home as you age you need to take in to account a few things. Think about your home and whether it will be practical for your future needs.

The 3 most important rooms to consider are your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Are these rooms easily accessible? Will you need to climb stairs? Can you modify these areas to make them safer? Determine what changes will need to be made and start to make updates now that will help you stay in your home longer.

The concept of Universal Design has come a long way in the last 30 years. Many houses are now being built with accessibility in mind. But, if your house was not, do not despair! There are ways to modify your home to allow you to remain there comfortably.

Perhaps you are developing arthritis and doors have become a challenge. Consider replacing traditional doorknobs with levers. Becoming unsteady on you feet? Shower chairs or grab bars are non-invasive ways to make you safer when you shower for very little cost. If you’re thinking of renovating your bathroom the sky is the limit from showers without barriers to tubs that you step into. Have you fallen in your home? Have an assessment done by a Home Care Nurse and/or Physical Therapist. They can show you simple tips and exercises that may help prevent falls from happening. (I can recommend a good agency.)

If you decide to make extensive changes to your home and are looking for a contractor make sure that he is certified in universal design and is knowledgeable about the products he recommends. If you are still unsure if Aging in Place is right for you here’s a pneumonic that may help
