Aging with Grace

An introduction to Ann Byrum-Ritter's new blog that will focus on learning how to age with grace. Exploring the issues that affect us as we age and how to make the most of each day.

Aging is one thing we can all count on.

How we age is really up to us. Those that choose the ostrich route and put their head in the sand will soon see they have not done themselves any favors. Those that take the bull by the horns and begin to learn about the aging process can look forward to living - not aging.

Join me in a conversation about aging and the aging process. We will discuss ways to prevent common injuries, how to spot the warning signs of potential illnesses and when to seek intervention.

So, you may be asking what qualifies me to write a blog on healthy aging? Caring for the aging population has been my passion throughout my entire career.

I began as a nurse in Michigan. After moving to Saint Charles County I continued to care for patients as a home health care nurse. After working for a few agencies I took the leap and opened my own company. My dream was to put the needs of the patient before the red tape of healthcare.

My first company was bought by a hospital and I became a consultant for home health care companies. But I missed the day-to-day business of caring. I opened Nurses & Company Home Health Care 20 years ago and have grown the company adding Hospice and Private Services as I saw a need for the continuity of care that can be provided when an agency is able to provide services throughout the full course of an older persons life.

But let’s face it, the best qualification for writing a blog on aging is that I too am aging, facing many of the challenges that come with aging. I am not here to lecture you on what you should do but have a conversation about how we all can live healthier more productive lives despite our age.

Throughout my 33-year nursing career I have had the privilege of caring for many older people and the one thing that I have learned is that everyone is different and there are so many factors that go into how someone ages. Through this blog we will discuss the aging process, the pitfalls of aging and the benefits -yes there are benefits to aging when it is done well.

Honestly is there anyone out there that would want to be 13 again?

We may grow older every year but age is only a number. Let’s live fully, laugh a-lot, and continually learn so that together we can age with grace.
