Farmer's Market Opens in Wentzville

Saturday marked the opening day of the 2011 season.

On Saturday, local farmers, produce growers and craft workers displayed and sold their items during the launch of the first Farmer's Market of 2011 in .

Numerous booths were on site carrying everything from colorful hand-stitched quilts, solar-powered yard decorations to an assortment of produce and jarred jams.

“It's refreshing to be able to buy things that are locally made and locally grown, and everything here is so fresh,” said Ola Martin, a member of the Community Club, who was present during the market’s launch.

Community Club representatives took into consideration the economic hardships many people in the community faced recently from job loss when deciding to create a farmer’s market in the area. They believe the main goal of the market should be to ‘stimulate regional agriculture at a price locals can afford.’ This in turn will help support the local community instead of large corporations.

Linda Fielder of Linda’s Produce has had a local produce stand for six years. She was on hand Saturday and plans to participate on a weekly basis. Her stand carried a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits such as eggplant, squash, watermelons and pineapples.

All of her products are “grown on local farms in the state of missouri,” said Fielder, who was optimistic about the markets future.

The price for a rental space at the market is $15 a week. Individuals wishing to rent for the full season pay $285 when paid in advance.

“We expect the market to grow considerably as more people find out about it,” said Martin.

All proceeds from the outdoor rental spaces is slated to be donated to local charitable organizations.

People interested in renting a space at the market should contact the Community Club for further details.
