Participation Down For Next Week's National Night Out

More than 37 million people participate nationwide in the National Night Out Against Crime.

At Wednesday night's Board of Aldermen work session, Wentzville Police Chief Lisa Harrison told the board that fewer Wentzville neighborhoods have signed up to participate in National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6 than in previous years.

National Night Out Against Crime began in 1984, according to the website of the National Association of Town Watch, as "an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back."

400 communities in 23 states participated in that first National Night Out in 1984. The effort now covers all 50 states, with more than 15,000 communities participating.

Harrison said that police and officials from the fire district would be visiting the neighborhoods that signed up and she invited the city officials to attend.
