Thanks for your response Elizabeth. I could be mistaken and based upon your loyal particpation for 10 years in watching the parade you must be correct. I do know that the picture of the FZW Band Marching on the 4th in the Patch was a photo that we used in the 2008 O'Fallon Comprehensive Plan. So clearly, in July 2007 when this photo was taken there was a band in the parade.

Elizabeth, I most assuredly share your disappointment but believe I can explain why this occurred. Two years ago the Missouri State High School Activity Association (MSHSAA) established what they called a "dead period." This is a period of 9 consecutive days where school districts need to refrain from holding practices, camps and the like. School districts can set these periods where they like choose and I believe that Fort Zumwalt selected the period that surrounded July 4th to offer families time to plan vacations and such around the Independence Day holiday.

I agree with Elizabeth, I was bummed that there was no marching band at the parade. I kept asking my young son who was able to step out and look down the parade route, "Any marching band yet?" And he would say no...we have been going to the O'Fallon parade for years and I have seen marching bands participate almost every year, if not every year. Somebody dropped the ball here... :(

@Joe - Thanks for the information. It's a shame when over-regulation has a negative impact on communities.

It is very hard to be able to get all of the band members together for "out of school season parades", many families have other plans or have vacation plans out of town. Holt High and Timberland high of the Wentzville School District use to join together to participate in the Lake St. Louis July 4th parade. Between the two schools there would be enough members to have a decent showing. ***Just a note*** Please don't forget that FZW school district is not the only school district in O'Fallon . There are children that are O'Fallon residents that attend school in the Wentzville School District and also in the Francis Howell School District. It is so disheartening being a parent of these students and there is very little recognition of for them in the city of O'Fallon.
