A new stamping press that makes fenders, doors and other key parts for GM trucks and vans could retain or add 55 jobs at the Wentzville plant.

In a press release Wednesday, General Motors announced another investment in its Wentzville Assembly plant.

GM expects to start construction in July on a 114,000-square-foot addition for the stamping operation, with the press operational by early 2015.

In May 2012, GM began construction on an addition to produce the company's new line of midsize pickups, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

“Our investment in a third stamping press is a win for the business, Wentzville employees and our customers,” said Manufacturing Manager Larry Zahner.

“Stamping parts where we assemble vehicles improves manufacturing efficiency and contributes to the high level of quality our customers deserve,” Zahner said.

The news got a thumbs-up from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon. "The automotive industry continues to invest in Missouri because we combine a low-tax, business-friendly environment with a workforce that is second to none," Nixon said.

"Investments by global brands like GM have helped keep Missouri's unemployment rate below the national average for 45 consecutive months," Nixon said.

"Today's announcement is another great win for Missouri workers and our economy."
