Hidden Gem: SSM St. Joseph Hospital

Health center offers a multitude of services.

When SSM Health Care-St. Louis announced the purchase of Crossroads Regional Medical Center (CRMC) in Wentzville — at the time owned by Essent Healthcare — and renamed the facility , no one was certain how the newest addition to the SSM family would fare.

So far, so good, according to SSM St. Joseph President Gaspare Calvaruso.

Calvaruso said medically speaking, the organization followed the need.

“SSM has seen marked growth in Wentzville and as such has been very much committed to providing services that can be easily accessible by all," he said. "So far we have been very happy with the success in Wentzville, especially with the volumes we’ve seen and have been able to accomplish there.”

St. Joseph - Wentzville holds the Missouri Quality Award, the Premier QUEST High Performing Hospital Award, and was listed as a ‘Best Place to Work’ from the St. Louis Business Journal in 2010 and 2011.

St. Joseph - Wentzville offers patients in Wentzville and surrounding communities a 24-hour emergency department and ambulatory services, as well as outpatient diagnostic services such as radiology (MRI, CT and mammography). Rehabilitation, laboratory, cardiology and pulmonary services are also offered.

The hospital has 74 inpatient behavioral health beds and an outpatient chemical dependency program.

Calvaruso said the SSM system decided to expand its behavioral medicine arm to Wentzville to serve the western portion of St. Charles County as well as Lincoln and Warren counties.

“There has been tremendous growth in outpatient behavioral health consisting of individual and group therapy,” he said. “This was an opportunity to expand the behavioral medicine platform that is spread throughout the region at DePaul, St. Mary’s and St. Charles.”

Rachel Peine, a communications specialist for SSM Health Care, said SSM’s other St. Charles County locations — in St. Charles and in Lake Saint Louis — offer the only trauma centers in the county and have neuroscience, pain care, breast care and sleep services.

SSM System

The SSM system began with five sisters of St. Mary with only $5 between them who traveled west from St. Louis to St. Charles to care for homebound patients suffering from smallpox. Today, SSM Health Care - St. Louis boasts eight hospitals, some 2,000 staff physicians and nearly 11,000 employees across its system.

An existing facility when it was purchased, the Wentzville hospital had served residents in western St. Charles, Lincoln, Montgomery and Warren counties since 1987.

Peine said St. Joseph – Wentzville was known as Doctor’s Hospital before being acquired by Essent in 2000. SSM purchased the hospital in 2006.
