Just because I'm younger doesn't mean you know more than me...

Just because somebody's younger doesn't mean that they haven't had major life events or experiences. They just may know more about life than you do.

It seems no matter how old I get I am always a "kid" to someone. At least, I seem to be called that quite frequently. Okay, in my 20s I could accept it. We still do stupid things in our 20s. However, now that I am in my 30s, I am starting to have an issue with people referring to me as a "kid." I have been married for 11 years. I have a young daughter. I have worked with cancer patients and terminally ill patients. I have seen horrible things (and great things too). I have had my heart broken by family, friends and strangers. I feel that I haven't been a "kid" for awhile.

When I was a teenager, my aunt would refer to me as a "old soul." What is a "old soul"? Well, it depends upon your belief system. For some, it means that they have reincarnated multiple times, and have many previous life experiences to draw upon in this life. For others, it may simply mean that their life has been "hard," and they have had to grow up fast in order to survive. I was 15 when she started telling me I was a "old soul." It was true. I felt way older than my 15 years at that time.

So, I really try not to judge people on their physical age. Just because my daughter is only 2 doesn't mean I am smarter or superior to her. She is just little right now. Being younger and little doesn't make her thoughts or feelings any less important than mine. It also doesn't mean I am "better" than her. I feel that sometimes people discount kids, because they're "just kids."

The same can be said for teenagers. That can be said of people in their 20s, 30s and so on...More importantly, just because someone looks young doesn't mean that they haven't had major life lessons. It also doesn't mean that a person who is "older" than you is more mature. Some of the most immature people I have met are older than me. What's funny is that they don't even realize it.

Next time you find yourself looking at a "kid" and before you dismiss what they say...take a second to remember that they may have experienced more in their short years than most people do who are over 50. You don't know what they've been through, and they don't know what you've been through. Basically, cut each other some slack, and don't prejudge a person based on age.
