When should I first take my child to the dentist?

I wonder when I should take my child to the dentist? He just has a couple of teeth, maybe I should wait until he's 3? Do offices see kids younger than that?

Hey All,

My name is Dr. Matt Kraner, and I have been a dentist here in Wentzville for the past 6 years, my office is next to Dierbergs on Wentzville Parkway (Kraner Family Dentistry). I thought I would reply to one of the most common questions we get at our office. The short answer to that question is ASAP! We see children from infant on up, although we typically will start routine cleanings at around 2. The visits prior to that point are often good for parents to start learning about the do's and dont's with maintaining your childs optimum oral health. For instance, you can start cleaning their gums with a soft washcloth with just a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste to help keep bacteria off the gums. You should use fluoride free toothpaste until your child can actively spit out the toothpaste, usually around 3-4 years of age. Don't wait too long to get your child in to the dentist, bringing them in early and getting them acquintated with the office is often a great way to start them on the right path! If you have further questions about your childs oral health give us a call! 636-887-3005. Thanks, Dr. Matt Kraner
