Area Commemorates Sept. 11 Ten Years On

Several local ceremonies slated to remember those that died.

Local cities, organizations and churches will be holding events this week to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and to commemorate the lives of those that died in the terrorist attacks.

Patch brings you a look at the events happening this week in the St. Charles County area. The events are listed by city and time.

Wentzville

  • "Out of the Ashes." — Sujo John and his wife were in the World Trade Center Towers as they came crashing down. John will share his story at 7 p.m. Wednesday at . For more information, please visit www.wentzvillefirst.com or call 636-327-4163.
  • The Crossings Church will hold a 'Heroes Among Us' rememberance service at 11 a.m. Sunday, at 115 May Road (behind ). There will be a barbecue cookoff following the service.
  • The , and the American Legion have collaborated with the city of Wentzville to mark the 10 year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. Sunday with a presentation of the colors and a procession of emergency and military personnel. The ceremony will include performances from band, ringing of the bells, a 21-gun salute and special recognition of emergency personnel who lost their lives trying to save others during the terrorist attacks.

Lake Saint Louis

  • Lake Saint Louis will observe the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks against America with a memorial ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at Lake Saint Louis . 

O'Fallon

  • in Wentzville's 4th Degree Assembly will hold a Knights of Columbus Patriot’s Day 5K walk/run and one mile fun run. The event begins at 8 a.m. at . The event will raise money for Backstoppers and the Wounded Warrior Project. 
  • Stop and Remember — At 12 p.m., all residents are asked to join in a national moment of remembrance by ceasing all regular activity for one minute and, as bells ring and sirens sound, reflect on the lives lost and those affected by the tragedies of 9-11.
  • Patriot Day Blood Drive — 12:30-3:30 p.m., . Walk-ins are welcome.
  • Patriot Day Ceremony — "A Tribute to First Responders," 1:30 p.m. at the O'Fallon 9-11 First Responders Memorial behind City Hall. The program features guest speaker Dawn Robinson, who survived the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. The ceremony will include the sounding of sirens, followed by a moment of silence, an invitation to the public to place flowers at the memorial, and remarks by O’Fallon’s Mayor Bill Hennessy, O’Fallon Police Chief Roy Joachimstaler, O’Fallon Fire Protection District Chief Michael J. Ballmann and St. Charles County Ambulance District Chief Ken Koch.

St. Charles

  • Harvester Christian Church will hold a memorial service at the . The event will be held at 10:28 a.m. Sunday. This is a community event — no tickets needed. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. with a free concert and the service at 10:28 a.m.
