Civil War Re-enactment Comes to Wentzville This Weekend

The Battle of Wentzville commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and this weekend marks the anniversary of Wentzville's battle between North and South.

The Battle of Wentzville, a skirmish that began when Union soldiers were fired upon by unknown assailants, will be reenacted this weekend in . 

Anita Branson, one of the event's organizers, said the Union soldiers were fired upon twice. No one ever confirmed if the attack was made by Confederate fighters.

"I don't know if people realize how much Civil War history there is in our area," Branson said. "It really is extraordinary."

Organizers anticipate 200-plus participants, including the 5th Missouri Cavalry, the Turner Brigade and Civil War-era medical reenactors.

"The heat is the only thing we are worried about," Branson said. "I don't know if the forecast will keep people away." 

Spectators should bring sunscreen, plenty of water and a lawn chair. A  cooling station will be set up for those that need additional assistance. 

Schedule of Events

All events will take place along Linn and Main Streets in downtown Wentzville unless noted.

Saturday

  • 9 a.m. — Camps open to public
  • 10 a.m. — Mounted drill
  • 11 a.m. — Ladies tea social at
  • 2 p.m. — Battle reenactment at the former Whisk property
  • 3 p.m. — Medical demonstration at surgeon’s tent
  • 4 p.m. — Camps close to public
  • 7:30 p.m. — Victorian Military Ball with live music at Green Lantern.

Sunday 

  • 9 a.m. — Camps Open to Public
  • 9 a.m. — Reenactor’s rummage sale
  • 10 a.m. — Civil War chapel service
  • 2 p.m. — Battle Reenactment (former Whisk property)
  • 3 p.m. — Reenactment closes
