Dogwoods: Location, Location, Location — Plus a Plant Sale!

Think hard about where your trees should go, then join Jardin du Lac for a plant sale and free advice.

Have you noticed the native white flowering Dogwood trees (Cornus florida) blooming in the natural wooded areas? This is an understory tree and the place they like to grow best is in shaded, protected environments where in the winter months their roots are comfortably covered with new fallen leaves.

Unfortunately, we like to plant them in our yards too often in full sun and quite often against the house facing west or south where they receive too much sun and hot reflective heat from the building and possibly gravel over their roots. Then we wonder why our tree died.

Always think about where a plant grows naturally and give it the same conditions to survive and flourish.

This week the garden club of Lake St. Louis was out in force digging and dividing perennials in the two gardens that they maintain, the Blue Star Memorial Garden in and the Community Association Garden near the parking lot of the C.A. Clubhouse.

The members are doing this for two reasons. As perennials grow and multiply, they need to be dug and divided so they don’t become overcrowded in the bed. Springtime is usually the best time to divide because they will have all summer to establish their roots before winter.

Then what do you do with these extra plants? You have a plant sale for the community to purchase plants that are known to grow very well in the area, and obtain valuable information from experienced gardeners of how to plant and maintain them.

Jardin du Lac garden club contributes in many ways to the community and the plant sale is one of their largest Ways and Means projects. The plant sale is Saturday morning April 30, 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. by the garden of the Community Association Clubhouse. (Rain date is Sunday May 1, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.) Print out the sale flyer and bring the coupon when you come to the sale.
