Friday the 13th: Are You Superstitious?

What makes Lake Saint Louisans nervous? Black cats? Spilling salt? Breaking a mirror?

With Friday the 13th upon us, Lake Saint Louis Patch asked several aldermen and city staffers if they had any superstitions they'd be willing to share.

  • Ralph Sidebottom, alderman: "I've never walked under a ladder, but then I used to be an electrician, and you just didn't do that. I've actually been very lucky throughout my life on Friday the 13th."
  • John Pellerito, alderman: "I played a lot of sports in school, and I always wanted to wear the number 'one.' It really affected how I played. I was the leadoff guy in baseball, a forward in soccer. When I was a freshman, a senior was wearing #1, and he wouldn't let me have it. Of course, after he graduated, I had it."
  • Donna Daniel, city clerk: "No."
  • Eric Sterman, assistant city administrator: "No, actually I'm not a superstitious guy. In fact, I walked under a ladder just the other day."
  • Kathy Schweikert, alderman: "I'm not, but my husband is. When we were first dating, he wrecked his car on Friday the 13th, and he always brings that up."
  • George Rich, alderman: "No, not really."
  • Mike Potter, mayor: "I didn't even know tomorrow was Friday the 13th."

(Editor's note: I'm not terribly superstitious myself. For awhile, a group of my friends decided that wearing blue underwear kept it from raining. It didn't take long to prove that wrong, but it sure was fun going around asking everyone what color underwear they had on.)
