Today in history, courtesy of the wonderful people at History.com: in 1909, the first racers at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway reached speeds of only just over 57 mph, and a poor road surface caused the deaths of six people.

And, on a personal note, on this day in 1938, my mother was born. I have her to thank for giving me her incredible work ethic, her creativity and her love of learning. Mom embraced computers long before I even considered giving up my old IBM electric typewriter—she was writing computer code when I was still using carbon paper and white-out. Happy Birthday, Mom!
