Last Friday was an unexpectedly delightful day for me. I opened my email and found an invitation from St. Charles County Parks for the media to attend a . I quickly changed my plans for the day, and my photographer and I had a wonderful time following Holt students through the woods and onto the banks of Peruque Creek. The rain that day didn't even feel like problem, it was so welcome.

Speaking of rain, if you were like me, you probably wished that the rain had hung around a few more days. Peggy Bahrmasel, our gardening columnist, thought so too. Check out her column later today.

Today in history, courtesy the folks at History.com: In 1814, the poem that would eventually become the National Anthem of the United States of American was put to paper. He wrote the poem, called "The Defence of Fort McHenry," after witnesses the bombardment of the fort by the British.
