The Second Cup: September 30 Edition

Good morning, Lake Saint Louis!

Yesterday was one of those days that just drains you. I arrived at the county courthouse before nine, but court was delayed almost an hour while arrangements were made to cover for an absent court reporter. We ended up moving to a different courtroom altogether.

The next hour, I spent listening to the Corey Brown sentencing and taking notes. Many of the words and phrases that I wrote down were things I have never put to paper in my 51 years. It was shocking and very, very sad. I was sitting right behind the victims' mother—she had to get up and leave the courtroom in tears at one point in the prosecuting attorney's presentation.

Going back through my notes over and over as I was writing the story, the judge's words kept running through my mind. Brown's crimes would always be a life sentence for that family.
