Troopers said the freezing rain, sleet, heavy snow, wind, and bitterly cold temperatures has made driving treacherous and dangerous and all highways and interstates continue to be snow covered.

The  (MoDOT) reports Interstate 70 from Wentzville to Kansas City re-opened Wednesday morning, but said most area interstates are still snow and ice covered.

Interstate 44 reopened Wednesday afternoon.

MSHP warns drivers that stopping quickly in the winter on snow-covered or icy roads is "next to impossible" and driving the speed limit in current conditions may not be slow enough.

Troopers are out in full force. If drivers become stranded due to road conditions, or see another driver stranded, they can call the highway patrol at 800-525-5555 or by dialing *55 on their cell phone.

Road crews are out working on all area roads.

According to MoDOT, snow accumulations of 3 to 10 inches now covers much of St. Louis and St. Charles Counties, but said Wednesday that the National Weather Service predicts the storm is over and now residents will deal with bitterly cold temperatures and powerful winds.

“Snow, sleet on the roads combined with the low temperatures and wind gusts of 30 miles per hour can still be dangerous and motorists should definitely drive for conditions, if they choose to travel,” said Ed Hassinger, MoDOT’s district engineer in St. Louis, in  a news release.

MoDOT crews are working 24 hours a day to address the changing conditions of the storm, the department added.
