Who Pulls the Weeds? Lake Saint Louis' Jardin du Lac Garden Club

Lake Saint Louis' Jardin du Lac garden club works hard to maintain gardens in the city's parks.

Have you ever gone to the Missouri Botanical Garden to enjoy the beauty of all the landscaping and gardens? You rarely see anyone actually working but you know they must because the gardens are so immaculate and void of weeds. Somebody must be pulling the weeds.

Locally in the Lake St. Louis area, there are several gardens that are taken care of by volunteers. You don’t always see them working, but again, somebody must be pulling the weeds.

Jardin du Lac garden club helps to maintain both the Blue Star Memorial garden that faces Ronald Reagan Boulevard and is located in Boulevard Park, and the Community Association garden located near the C.A.Clubhouse on Cognac. Volunteers from the club get out there early in the morning to pull weeds, deadhead perennials and basically keep the gardens looking nice. Club volunteers braved the hot and humid weather on Monday morning to maintain both gardens.

Recently the garden club agreed to refurbish the flower bed in front of the Founders Park Entry sign. Volunteers have been out on three occasions digging up existing plants in the bed, removing weeds, tilling up the soil and designing a plan for a new and improved garden and adding mulch to help keep weeds from growing.

Garden Club member Ann Wilke drew up the new design and with the help of club members and Lake St. Louis Parks Department, a new bed was planted using existing and newly purchased plants. Similar to the Blue Star Memorial garden, the plants at the Founders Park sign had to tolerate sunny, hot, drought conditions because neither beds are irrigated. They exist only on nature’s rain and the richly amended soil.

A few of the plants in the Founders Park bed are: Purple Coneflower, Stella d'oro day lilies as well as the day lilies found in ditches along roadways, Lavender, Potentilla shrubs, Daffodil bulbs and Salvia.

Garden of the Month

Charlene Wood’s garden was awarded the honor of Garden of the Month for June 2011. Charlene’s is a well-established garden with mature Hosta from the tiny "Lemon Lime" to the huge "Sum and Substance." She has created wandering paths through the woodland where you might come upon a little lost lamb, or a Gnome watching over the garden. There is something interesting to see at every turn and very soothing to just wander slowly through.

If you are interested in gardening, learning about gardening or joining a garden club, stop by the Community Association Clubhouse the second Monday morning of each month and sit in on a meeting. Meetings start at 9:30 a.m.
