Pounding Some Pavement

Action speaks louder than words.

I recently took my 4-year-old to the bank with me to do some Friends of the Wentzville Parks business. As we were waiting for the transactions to complete, my son asked me where we were. I, of course, being the ever attentive father decided to take the opportunity to teach my son a little bit about banks and a lot about life. I began to explain how banks are where you put your money when your piggy bank gets too big, and how banks play an important role in our economy. After a few minutes of expounding on the virtues and issues of the U.S. banking system, my son looked up at me and said, "OK, Daddy...can I still have a sucker?"

That experience taught me a couple of important lessons. One, I tend to over-parent my kids. Two, no matter how passionate I may be about a topic, word are just words and they often fall on deaf ears.

A few weeks from now, The Friends of the Wentzville Parks is hosting our second annual Pound The Pavement for Parks 5k/10k. We at the FoWP love our parks, you might even say we're passionate about them. To us, parks are we bring our kids to explore the playground, or cool off on hot day at the pool. Parks are a bubble of calm in a chaotic world, a place to be active or relax...but those are just words. The Pound the Pavement 5k/10k is action.

And action it will be! This year our courses are going to be certified. We're going to have pre-race festivities and post race massages along with a beer garden. We are also hosting pre-race running clinics on Saturday mornings. These clinics will teach you about race day gear, stretching, nutrition and much more. After the clinics, we will have experienced runners to lead some group runs through the 5 and 10k routes. You can learn more and sign up at here.

I encourage you to sign up. Get active. Whether its your first race or 100th, exercise clears the mind and nurtures the soul, and it's all for a great cause. If running is not your thing, we need lots of volunteers, so put Saturday, August 27, in your calendar and we'll see you there. Or do you just want a sucker?
