Talk Cardinals and everyone's a St. Louisan. From a feet-on-the-street sense, though; some St. Chuck folk refer to the MO River as a dividing line. There's NO ST. CHARLES option on CRAIGSLIST
Do St. Charles County dwellers really consider themselves part of the St. Louis anymore? From a Census Bureau standpoint, I'm guessing the answer is we are undoubtedly part of the St. Louis metro-area landscape.
However, from a feet-on-the-street sense of things; the answer seems different. I have heard (more than once) St. Charles County folk refer to the Missouri River as a dividing line -- us and them! And what about the apparent St. Charles County consensus on bringing public transportation (Metro) from St. Louis through to Wentzville or so? Not gonna happen!
But, start talking Cardinal Nation and, well, everyone is a St. Louisan. Here are a few other STL area unifiers:

1) When you are out of town and someone asks you where you're from; 2) When a President or Governor hails from St. Louis we all take a little pride metro wide; 3) We all love our renowned St. Louis Zoo; 4) trying a St. Charles Post-Dispatch never quite works out though it's been tried several different ways; and 5) There is NO ST. CHARLES category on CRAIGSLIST!
In the end, I guess any individual can root for whatever team s/he likes. I still follow and root for the Football Cardinals -- even without Warner.

As an aside; I wonder if any St. Louis Countian even knows that the Rascals exist.
At one time, it was thought the Cardinals might get close to St. Chuck with an Earth City stadium. Anyone remember? Or, was that the Football Cardinals?
