Maybe your dad is a grill master, serving up tantalizing charbroiled burgers and fish. Perhaps he's a vegetarian connoisseur, roasting carrots, onions and squash to perfection for a hearty meal.
They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and if you have a foodie father, there's no better gift this coming Father's Day than that of a delicious meal.
A good tried and true idea is to make his favorite dish. It shows him that you pay attention to his likes and dislikes, and that he has passed his knowledge on to you. Ask mom for the recipe and surprise him at the table.
Another option is to go all out, especially if he is a bit of a gourmet. Fancy a burger up with mixed greens dressed in truffle oil and homemade roasted garlic aioli, or have a seafood extravaganza with lobster and drawn butter.
It can be difficult to get creative with a vegetarian eater, but not impossible. As a burger patty replacement, try grilling a large portabella mushroom and combine it with arugula, tarragon mustard and crispy onions.

Roasted Garlic Aioli
Aioli is basically a fancy way of saying mayonnaise made from scratch, but you can definitely taste the difference from the store-bought version.
- 3 cloves garlic, peeled
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/2 - 1 lemon, juiced
- Olive oil, as needed
- Sea salt
In a small saute pan, pour oil over the garlic until completely submerged (about 1 inch of oil). You may want to do more cloves in the pan so you have extra for another recipe. Cover the pan with foil. In a 350 degree oven, roast the garlic until golden brown and completely soft. Remove the cloves from the oil once cooled down and mash with a fork.
In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and garlic. Slowly drizzle olive oil into the bowl, whisking continuously, until the sauce is pale and looks like mayonnaise (it will double or triple in volume). If the sauce "breaks" (which means the yolk and oil separate and it looks greasy and separated), at a small splash of water or lemon to bring it back together.
Squeeze lemon juice in to taste, and season with salt to taste. Serve with fish, burgers and sandwiches.
