What Should Go Here: Corner of Wentzville Parkway and Hwy. 61

Occasionally we highlight a vacant commercial space and ask: What business would you like to see move into this area?

We want Wentzville Patch to be a place where you can not only find out what's going on around town, but a place where you can share your thoughts and ideas with neighbors.

Our newest feature—Visions for Vacancies—aims to help residents take an active role in planning and building their community.

Each week, we'll highlight a vacant commercial space and ask what you would like to see move into this area? If you know of an area you'd like to see highlighted, tell us in the comments.

This week, we are taking a look at a large lot on the northwest corner of Wentzville Parkway and Hwy. 61. It's across the street from the Lindenwood Ice Arena and right next door to the QuikTrip. Right now, the only thing there is an abandoned farmhouse and outbuildings.

It's a nice, big site with great frontage.

If it were up to you, what would you like to see there? What do you think would best serve the Wentzville community in that spot?

Well, Marshell, there are a few "big box" stores that Wentzville doesn't have yet. I hate to see the green space go, too -- there are a couple farms on Wentzville Parkway, and I dread the day that the bulldozers move in. But the truth is, at some point people sell their property, and there's very little chance someone is going to buy it to farm. I like to think that Patch gives people the chance to speak up about what they would like to see come in to their communities. We could only hope that the property owners would also love to see it stay green and maybe donate it to the city for a new park. That would be wonderful!

If you were looking for a response of a different slant, such as what you have suggested in your last comments, I would have expected the initial question to read something along the line, "If we must use this space for something other than what it is, what would you suggest?" This, I might read and just let it pass by without comment. But, it sounds like you are promoting commercial use of lands along this and other Wentzville business corridors. Do you really feel that your position on this community forum is best used by promoting only the business aspects of land development? And, another "box store"? In stating "there are a few "big box" stores that Wentzville doesn't have yet." Is this the new standard, having them all? I guess my problem is that, even with "your" box stores, our taxes are not heading downward. Put you new box store in, and then another, until all the space is used up, and at the same time, close your eyes to what the Wentzville government, including its schools, is doing to be (un)accountable to the taxpayers and you will help our community to be just like all the others. Perhaps, you might take the same time you are taking to ask your question about land use, and do some real journalistic investigating about how our tax dollars are being wasted. How about a question on your website like, "What do you think about a government that is more concerned with acquiring businesses, yet has no plan or desire to represent the taxpayers in any accountable way?"

A park with a gazebo on the hill. A walking path and a huge children's playground.

Sounds like a plan.

On that location how about a Cracker Barrel would work well there with the access to the highway?
