You Might Never Know When It's Your Last Chance

Events of the past two weeks have made me think about all the little things we do that make a huge difference in the lives of those we love.

Yesterday I stood at the grave of one of my best friends.

This morning I got a phone call telling me that my Grandmother had passed away.

Needless to say, these past few weeks have not been good.  But I have had lots of time to think about things, to think about life.

With the passing of two such huge figures in my life I have been very reflective.  I’ve been thinking about my time spent with these two people, recalling memories and funny stories, and realizing the impact they made on my life and then in turn on my family’s life.

I will be heading down to southern Missouri soon to meet up with the rest of my extended family for a time of mourning and a time of celebration.  We’ll comfort each other by sharing stories of a woman we all loved deeply.  We’ll celebrate her life together…just the way she would have wanted.  But knowing how my brain works there will also be plenty of contemplation.

Both my very good friend Wil and my Grandma had their roles they played in my life, roles that will affect me until others mourn my passing.  Things they said and did helped change me and steer my life in a direction that would not have been without them.

Stop and think about that for a moment.

The things you say and do now will affect your children/loved ones until they leave this earth.

That’s a sobering thought.  All those little conversations, all the interactions- good and bad, all add up to an influence that echoes for decades down the road.  Your life and legacy outlive you maybe generations.

In the coming weeks we’ll be looking at ways to positively influence your children.  We’ll look at those little things that make a huge difference in the lives of those we love.

I realize this is probably my shortest post (I can get long winded, even on the computer) but I’m making plans to head out of here and celebrate the life of a woman that I and all of us lover dearly.  Until we meet again make sure that you tell your family how much you love them.

You just never know if it may be your last chance.
