Your Open Garage Door: An Open Invitation
If you're lucky, you'll get a visit from a Wentzville Police officer, and not a thief.
Did you know that if your garage door is open after 11 p.m. and a police officer rides by, he or she will knock on your door to notify you of the potential for theft?
Officers on patrol in residential neighborhoods after 11 p.m. check for open garage doors. If they see one, they knock on the door and ask the homeowner if they were aware that the door was open.
The practice is part of the Wentzville Police Department's effort to crack down on property crimes—in particular, car thefts and burglaries. Police also routinely check for open doors at businesses around town, too.

Some owners say that they leave the door open for family members coming in late, but Harrison cautioned against that practice.

"We just want to let them know we had a lot of thefts out of garages last year," Harrison said.
"One way we can do that is by checking our business doors and making sure our residential garage doors stay closed," Harrison said.
