Aldermen Question Plans for Project Parks

Open house for Project Parks is tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Board of Aldermen is holding a meeting today at 4 p.m. to discuss plans for , the city's plan to add three new parks.

The meeting was called after a meeting last week failed to answer several questions posed by aldermen.

Many of the questions revolved around a water detention pond in what will be Heartland Park. Aldermen questioned where the money was coming from for the estimated $1.2 million lake.

The city paid $2 million for the land for the water detention facility out of two budgets — $1 million from water and $1 million from parks. The detention pond is needed with or without the park.

City officials were looking into the finances to bring aldermen an answer to their query. The city received some grant funding for water improvements and the board wanted clarification on what features the grant funds could and could not be used.

Project Parks will be financed by a 1/2 cent sales tax passed by voters in August 2010. Each park was to be built in two phases, according to plans presented to citizens before the vote.

The board of aldermen questioned the practicality of that plan last week, asking if the park planners would consider doing two complete parks in Phase 1 and working on a third park in Phase 2.

The 4 p.m. work session will be held at and is open to the public.
