Assisted Living Facility in Old Pitman Funeral Home Gets P&Z Nod

Pitman Funeral Home received approval from the Planning & Zoning Commission for both the rezoning of the property and a conditional use permit for the facility.

T.E. Pitman Funeral Home, Inc. is planning to convert the old funeral home on East Pitman to an assisting living facility.

Jennifer Gettman was at the April 5 meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission to request rezoning the property from Single Family Residential to Village Center Corridor Zoning District.

The old funeral home is located at 909 E. Pitman and sits on 1.18 acres just south of the railroad tracks.

Getmann said the building was currently vacant. The company plans to convert the building to an assisted living facility for a maximum of 26 residents. Getmann said the company expected the residents to be mostly seniors and veterans, and that the current parking lot would be sufficient for staff and visitors.

An ornamental 6' fence would be added at the back of the property for the safety of the residents.

Mike Hays, the Commission's Vice Chairman, said that they had received two letters from neighbors about the proposed facility: one was for it and one was against it.

"We couldn’t ask for a better balance. It seems more fitting to this residential area than a funeral home," Hays said.

Getmann offered to visit with the neighbors to discuss concerns, and she also agreed that the company would remove an old shed in the back of the property.

The commission approved the re-zoning and conditional use permit for the property.
