Board Approves Preliminary Tax Levy

Rate to stay the same as previous year.

The Board of Aldermen Wednesday approved a preliminary tax levy of 0.9075. That figure is the same as the 2010 levy and includes a 0.8325 general fund levy and a park fund levy of 0.075.

According to City Administrator Dianna Wright, the preliminary tax levy is not binding, but is required by the legislature.

"As part of a legislative change, counties are now required to send out preliminary tax statements for planning purposes," she said. "We have our new assessed valuations from the county. This number reflects existing homes and businesses and new construction."

Wright noted that the property values in the city were down 3.4 percent over the previous year, a decline anticipated by city staff. She noted the city planned for a 5 percent reduction in assessed valuations.

"We are proposing at this point to keep the levy the same as last year," she said. "We will take action in September when the final official tax levy rate needs to be set."
