Board of Aldermen Approve Ward 2 Redistribution

Some Ward 2 residents are now in Ward 3 or Ward 1.

Some  residents living in Ward 2 of the city will now be constituents of Ward 3 and Ward 1.

At Wednesday night’s city council meeting, all aldermen present voted to redistribute the wards to reflect the growing population of Ward 2 based on the 2010 census. Ward 1 Alderman Cheryl Kross and Ward 2 Alderman Chris Gard were absent.

Ward 3 Alderman Nick Guccione said Ward 3 picked up the largest percentage of the redistributed residents from Ward 2, about 1,800 people. Ward 3 Alderman Rick Stokes said the change will ensure that Ward 3 residents are better represented.

“I think this is great for the citizens of Ward 3,” Stokes said. “The whole reason we have wards is so we have equal representation. And in the past Ward 3 had a large geographical area, but had less population. So I think the changing of this I think is great and I think it’s fair for all of the citizens.”

Stokes said the new boundaries also guarantee that each alderman represents a piece of downtown Wentzville.

Ward 2 Alderman Vann Sample said, despite losing constituents, he believes the change will have little affect on former Ward 2 residents.

“I think it gives equal representation on the dais of it redistributes the population amongst the aldermen,” Sample said. “I don’t think the residents at all will see a drastic effect of this except which ballot they get.”

In addition to the ward redistribution bill, the Board of Aldermen approved a bill allowing the city of Wentzville to participate in the Show Me Green Tax Holiday.

The Show Me Green Tax Holiday will let residents buy energy efficient appliances tax free every year from April 19th to April 25th.

The board also named July 2011 ‘Parks and Recreation Month’ to recognize the Parks and Recreation Department’s efforts in improving the quality of life of Wentzville’s citizens and the environmental health of the community.
