Board Votes Against Mayor's Choice for Ward 3 Seat

The Wentzville Board of Aldermen failed to approve Michael Hays to fill the Ward 3 seat.

At a special meeting on Wednesday just before the regular 7 p.m. meeting, the board voted 3-2  against Michael Hays, Mayor Nick Guccuione's choice to fill the seat he vacated when he was elected mayor in April.

Aldermen Chris Gard and Forrest Gossett voted to approve the appointment; Aldermen Rick Stokes, Sonya Shryock and Cheryl Kross voted against the appointment.

Michael Hayes, who has been a Wentzville resident since 1989, had been the . The board asked for a procedure that would allow residents to apply for any vacant positions, although the power of appointment is the mayor's, and he is not required to choose from that pool of applicants.

The board, however, is required to approve the mayor's appointments.

So what are the Aldermen afraid of by not having Michael Hays on their board? Are they afraid to approve someone who has 16 years experience with the City operations? Combine the experience of all 5 of the Aldermen and they can't even get close to his experience. Shame on the Aldermen for not allowing my ward to be represented to the extent it should be. My mission is to tell as many people about our inadequate current board.

There was a time when the City of O'Fallon was all over the papers because their city council and mayor could not agree on anything. Get ready Wentzville, it seems as if this is the old style group of alderman that used to exist in O'Fallon is emerging in Wentzville....They will talk a lot, slam each other and get little accomplished except for getting their names in the papers... Sounds to me like the new mayor needs to step up and take control and the residents need to make their voices heard. Just sayin'

This is just plain wrong on so many levels. I think the Aldermen are trying to tell the voters that we are too stupid to elect a Mayor capable of making appointments so they need to be in control. The board already has a majority voting bloc, so what difference does it make who Mayor Guccione appoints? By not approving the Mayors appointment the board is limiting public discourse and the free exchange of ideas as well as denying us our rightful representation. I guess we should not be so supprised as the Aldermen are also limiting our rights to free speech in open forum by trying to limit comments to only what is on the agenda. However this does not seen to apply to them as they all bring up non agenda topics during their reports. Welcome to the Peoples Rebublic of Wentzville.
