Election Day in Lake Saint Louis: Half Cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax

Revenue from the sales tax would be dedicated to street and parks improvements.

Lake Saint Louis residents go to the polls Tuesday, August 6, to vote on Proposition P—a half-cent capital improvement sales tax.

The tax includes language for a "sunset" of ten years. After that, the issue may go back to the voters.

Revenue from the tax will be used exclusively for the public works and parks departments.

With approximately $1.6 million needed each year to maintain, repair, and replace aging streets, the new sales tax could generate approximately $900,000 for street projects each year. 

Current funding can manage to pave asphalt streets every 37 years and concrete streets every 54 years.

The additional sales tax revenue will allow the city to pave asphalt streets every 15 years and concrete streets every 30 years, which is closer to industry standard replacement cycles.

The Lake Saint Louis Parks Department, which manages and maintains 96 acres of park land, would use the revenues for:

  • New playground equipment, $395,000
  • Replacement lights for the ballfields at Founders Park, $545,000
  • Path Renovations, $82,000
  • Veterans Park Water Feature, $40,000
  • Parking Lot Renovations, $173,000
  • Bathroom Renovations, $253,000
  • Ballfield Maintenance, $54,000
  • Pond Fountains, $15,000
The only other measure on the ballot in St. Charles County is a levy increase for the Orchard Farms Fire Protection District.
