Emergency Session to Determine if St. Charles County Will Waive Late Tax Penalty

Tax bills were mailed 17 days late. If approved, the waiver would apply to property taxes mailed in by Jan. 23

The St. Charles County Council will meet in an emergency session Tuesday to consider waiving penalties for late property tax payments if the taxes are paid by Jan. 23.

The council began considering waiving the penalities after the St. Charles County Collector’s Office officials .

County Collector Michelle McBride said the late payments were due to problems with new software the county purchased.

Residents besieged the council and county offices with complaints after McBride announced the bills would not be mailed by the Dec. 2 deadline, but residents still had to meet the Dec. 30 deadline to mail in their taxes. The bills were not mailed until Dec. 19, although tax bill information was available online Dec. 8.

Typically, there is a 3 percent penalty for a late payment, plus 2 percent for each month it is late.

The council will meet at 4:30 p.m. today at the , 100 North 3rd St. in St. Charles.
