Group Seeks to Overturn St. Charles County Police Decision

The St. Charles County Police Department was approved by a slim margin in the November 2012 election.

A group of people who believe that "the county's chief law enforcement officer should be elected by and accountable to the People, not politicians" is working to overturn last November's decision to create a St. Charles County Police Department.

The group, Saint Charles County Liberty Project, issued a press release this week to let the public know that they are collecting signatures to get the issue on the November 2014 ballot.

"On the November 2012 ballot, the voters of Saint Charles County were presented with a confusing law enforcement charter amendment question, which passed by a slim margin of 0.72%. Unless it is overturned, the elected county Sheriff will retain only court duties, and will be stripped of all law enforcement responsibilities," the press release states.

The new county police department is scheduled to become effective on Jan. 1, 2015. The new county police chief would be an appointed position.
