Senator Rupp: Honoring Our Veterans and Armed Forces

Local legislator offers opinion on issues.

(State Sen. Scott Rupp, R-, has released his column for the week of May 7. The opinions expressed in the column are those of Sen. Rupp and do not reflect the views of the Wentzville Patch. —Ed.)

With only one full week remaining in the 2012 legislative session, the Senate is focused on giving its approval to quality bills. The Senate approved its version of a measure that would help fund veterans’ homes and honor their service to our country, among other priorities. Looking out for the well-being of our veterans is essential, and I’m proud to endorse measures that support our troops. These men and women have sacrificed so much for our safety and freedom, and when they reach their golden years, it’s our job to take care of them with respect and dignity.

For FY 2013 (and each fiscal year after that), HB 1731 dedicates a portion of funds to be used to take care of our men and women who fought for our freedom. If the Legislature did not act this year to provide the necessary funding in 2013, the funds for the veterans’ homes and cemeteries would have been depleted. The measure now goes to the governor for his signature.

House Bill 1105 is another measure that looks out for members of our military. The bill received approval from the Senate and House last week (5-2) and is on its way to the governor.

The legislation addresses the age limit for service in the state militia. Currently, the maximum age for service in the state militia is 64 years of age. This act would allow the Adjutant General to waive the maximum age limit on a case-by-case basis. For those who are able, we should not put an age limit on Missourians who desire to serve our country. The legislation states that the militia of the state should consist of all able-bodied citizens who meet the physical and mental qualifications prescribed by law. There is no maximum age limit on heroism.

All members of our Armed Services deserve to be treated with the highest level of respect, and to all our military members — from young Missourians who enlist in their late teens and early 20s to men and women in their 60s or above — I thank you for your service and for protecting us at home. The sacrifices that you and your loved ones make are never forgotten.

If you have any questions about this or any other important state matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Our last day of the 2012 legislative session is Friday, May 18, and I’m glad to listen to your thoughts and opinions as we head into the final days of session.
