St. Charles County Council Backs Naming Bridge for Stan Musial

Council passed a resolution in support of the naming on Monday.

The St. Charles County Council on Monday expressed support for naming the new Mississippi River Bridge in honor of Cardinals legend Stan Musial, who died last week.

The council passed a resolution Monday night in support of a push by Missouri and Illinois senators to name the new Mississippi River Bridge in honor of the baseball great.

“Stan Musial brought honor to himself, his family and the entire Cardinal nation by his generosity, humility and dignity, making innumerable visits to children in the hospital and reaching out to children and fans in ways too numerous to mention,” the resolution reads, in part.

Council president Terry Hollander said he felt that everyone revisited their childhood while remembering Musial's accomplishments.

"I think this would be a great thing for the area to have a bridge named in his honor," Hollander said.

County Executive Steve Ehlmann told council members he was one of the 34 senators who voted to rename the Mark Twain Expressway the Mark McGuire Highway, a decision he came to regret.

"There was kind of a lot of peer pressure," he said. "I don't think we can go wrong with Stan the Man, not because he's a baseball player but because he's a great human being."
