Kaylyn Bauer Is This Week's Whiz Kid

• Accomplishment:  junior Kaylyn Bauer was among 36 St. Louis-area high school juniors who were honored as future scientists, engineers and doctors by the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ College of Arts and Sciences on March 2 in the Millennium Student Center on the UMSL campus. Bauer received a Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science.
• Key To Awesomeness: “Accomplishments in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines represent an essential component for America’s future,” said Ron Yasbin, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “As a nation we need to nurture and support those students who will be the leaders in advancing our knowledge of those disciplines. By honoring students who have demonstrated truly outstanding capabilities in the sciences we are helping to reinforce the importance of these areas of study and research.”

Bauer is the daughter of Rachelle and John Bauer of . Last month, she received the Society for InVitro Biology Award for her project “The Effect of BPA Exposure on Sex Determination of O. Latipes” at the Missouri Tri-County Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

She was also invited to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles May 7-14 as a “promising underclassman” in order to observe projects in preparation for next year’s competition. Bauer has been enrolled in the Wentzville School District’s Horizons (gifted and talented) program since she was in first grade “which helped develop her interest in research,” said her mother Rachelle.

Bauer currently participates in an independent research class at Holt, as well as the school’s theater program and says she hopes to study forensic science or forensic pathology in college.
