Mickey Mouse, Fred Flintstone Inspire Scholarship Winners

Students from Holt and Timberland decorated hydrants with classic cartoon characters.

Mickey Mouse, Smurfette, Superman, Fred Flintstone. Did you ever think you'd see them all together on a Wentzville sidewalk?

Wentzville's recently awarded $4,000 in scholarships to two area students. In this annual scholarship competition, students are given a theme, which they use to create a design. The art departments at  and  high schools each chose five designs from the dozens submitted.

Those students are given a hydrant as the "canvas" for their design.

This year, the 10 hydrants, all decorated with the theme of "classic cartoons," were judged by city employees, and the top design from each school won its artist a $2,000 scholarship.

Judii Tran was Holt's winning design. Her hydrant featured Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willy. Tran is a senior at Holt. She plans on studying graphic web design at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Emily Woodruff, a senior at Timberland, plans to attend in an art-related program.

This is the 15th year for the scholarship program, which coincides with National Water Week. The hydrants are on display on the sidewalk outside the city water control building 802 East Pearce.
