With A Timberland Win And A Holt Loss, Area Teams Enjoy Fun Day Of Hoops At St. Charles Family Arena

Wolves win a thriller over Northwest House Springs, while Indians have trouble staying with high-flying U. City.

ST. CHARLES – When their chances came to finally step on the big stage at the on Saturday afternoon, both of the area high schools stepped up and put on quite an exciting show.

The GAC/Suburban South-West Shootout is quickly becoming one of the truly fun annual basketball events in the area every year, and both the boys teams from and High Schools help solidify that feeling, by playing a pair of exciting ballgames against opponents from the Suburban West and Suburban South Conferences.

Timberland delivered what might’ve been the most exciting win of the weekend, when it rallied in the final seconds for a 49-46 win over Northwest House Springs, while Holt simply ran out of time in a comeback bid against University City, which eventually held off the Indians for a 60-54 defeat.

“I thought I was going to pull my hair out, but we got through it,” Timberland head basketball coach Kyle DeWeese said. “We nearly gave the game away, with the turnovers at the end, but I’m proud of these kids that they fought back and got us this win.”

Junior John Hummel proved to be the star of they day for Timberland, after making a series of plays in the final 24 seconds that helped the Wolves pull out the win.

First, Hummel knocked down a free throw with 24.1 ticks on the clock to tie the score at 46.

Then on Northwest’s next possession, Hummel stole the ball from point guard Adnan Al-Amami and drove the length of the court for spectacular layup with 8 seconds left, that gave the Wolves the lead for good.

And just to make sure there’d be no doubt that the day belonged to Timberland, Hummel stole the ball away from Al-Amami again with 2 seconds left, and set up teammate Jack James for a final free throw that put the game away.

“It felt amazing after we struggled a little bit there,” Hummel said. “I got a lucky charge, and then I got a steal and I got a basket. It was amazing.”

“He always likes to joke that he was on the junior team in seventh grade and that he ran the point,” DeWeese said of the 6’4, 220-pound Hummel. “There was that point guard coming out in him in the end.”

After the jubilant Wolves players left the court, the Holt team took the floor for a matchup against U. City, which came into the event with a 5-2 record.

And early on, U. City showed off its terrific high-flying splendor, with a number of fancy layups and monster dunks by senior Travon Williams and crew.

But in the second half, Holt got its offense going, first with a 10-0 run in the third quarter that pulled the Indians to within a 34-28 deficit, and again later in the fourth quarter, when Mike Carter and Justin Davis led a 15-2 charge that made the score 59-51 with just over a minute left in the game.

Unfortunately, a three-pointer by leading scorer Tre Vaughn (13 points) at the buzzer was the only other bucket Holt would get, as U. City held on for the 60-54 win.

“They just played better than us today,” Holt head coach Johnnie Williams said. “Their defensive pressure is really something to (behold). They really get after it.”

The Indians are now 2-3 on the season, but will be back in action with on Monday, with a game at Ft. Zumwalt East High at 7 p.m.

The big game of the week though, is the Pink Zone Wentzville rivalry game when both the boys and girls teams from Timberland will play at Holt High on Thursday night.

The girls game, with 3-5 Timberland taking on 5-2 Holt, will begin the festivities with a 5 p.m. start, followed by the boys game showdown with 3-4 Timberland matching up against 2-3 Holt.

“It should be a fun night,” Williams said. “We’re all looking forward to it.”
