Holt Golf Tees Up Against Francis Howell In Mid-Season Competition

Holt's golf team matched up against Francis Howell at Whitmoor Country Club.

Despite dropping its first dual match of the season to Francis Howell last week, Holt's boy's golf team is off to a strong start in 2011, having won both of their first two dual matches, and finishing first or second in both tournaments they've participated in.

The Indians dropped the dual with Francis Howell at Whitmoor Country Club, by a score of 172-180. Holt's coach remains upbeat on the season.

"We've been playing very well despite not having had great weather conditions lately," said coach Michael Jarrett.

Jarrett pointed to seniors Corey Richardson and Jon Alexander as solid performers this season, as expected. Richardson led all scorers in the dual with Francis Howell, posting a round of 38.

"Those two guys have been playing together for three years and consistently putting up good results, they're a big part of our team," said Jarrett.

Additionally, Holt has seen a surprise of sorts in the production of sophomore Hunter Butler,  who has played very well and pushed the seniors.

"Butler has been playing in the number five spot but his performance has been strong enough to be in the top two or three on our team," said Jarrett.

Butler finished third at the Bogey Hills Invitational, early in the season, and is expected to contribute to Holt's efforts at districts in May.

Francis Howell was paced by junior Mike Wooten, who is coming off a successful summer in 2010, which saw him win the Callaway Junior World Qualifier.

Course management is an area Holt hopes to improve on, assuming the weather cooperates and the team has an opportunity to get in practice rounds during the week.

"It's tough to make time for practice on specific areas, with junior varsity and varsity schedules being juggled by the coaching staff, but we are setting it up to have at least two days a week to work on some things the team needs to learn," said Jarrett.

Holt competed in the Battle of Winghaven tournament on Monday. The Indians will follow that with a dual against Francis Howell North on April 18.
