Holt Golfer Robertson Caps Senior Season With Flourish

Consistency was one of Holt senior golfer Corey Robertson's biggest strengths throughout this season.

senior Corey Robertson was hoping to come home from Springfield with a state medal.

Robertson came up just short of achieving that goal, finishing 19th at the state Class 4 Meet at Twin Oaks Country Club on Monday and Tuesday (the top 15 earn a medal).

"I missed by just two strokes," Robertson said. "When you do that you play back in your mind two strokes you left out on the course. But overall I was happy with the way I played."

Robertson should be pleased as he was the second-best finisher from St. Charles County (Francis Howell's Mike Wooten won the individual championship).

It was the second straight year in which Robertson qualified for the state tournament. He finished 83rd last year, shooting an 82 on each day.

"Corey has always been an upper-tier golfer when it comes to length off the tee, his iron play and his short game," Holt coach Michael Jarrett said. "When he struggles it is on the green."

Jarrett said Robertson's biggest improvement during his high school career has not been with his physical play.

"Corey always had the ability and when he was a sophomore he could put up a score in the upper 70s, but then the next day he would be in the upper 80s or 90," Jarrett said.

"A lot of that had to do with his mental approach and course management. He needed to mature on the course and he has done that. One of the best things a golfer can have is a short memory."

Consistency was one of Robertson's biggest strengths throughout his senior season. He had a solid district tournament and finished fifth in the sectional to qualify for the state meet.

Robertson found himself in the top 15 when he shot a 79 on the opening day last Monday.

"The conditions were tougher Monday as were the pin placements," Robertson said. "I hit the ball really well although my putting was not great."

Robertson got off to a great start Tuesday and found himself in medal contention as he was just two over par after 13 holes. The 14th would prove to be his nemesis as Robertson had a seven on the par-five hole.

"I usually play a draw and there was a tree on the right side," Robertson said. "I got an awful bounce and made the double."

Robertson would come back with an impressive par on the par-three 15th hole but he finished with a bogey on each of the final three holes, and finished with a two-day total of 157.

"The last three holes are really challenging," Robertson said. "I hit my drive on 18 that hit the lip of the fairway bunker. It was a tough break, but that is the game of golf."

Jarrett was still impressed with the final high school match for Robertson, who will attend Mizzou in the fall.

"The new format this year assured that the best of the best was going to be in the state tournament and Corey finished in the top 20," Jarrett said. "He performed very well."

Robertson's teammate Jacob Spiegel also competed at state. The sophomore finished 65th after shooting an 86 on the first day and an 81 on the second.

Joshua O'Hearn led the way among five golfers with an 83-81. That was good for 53rd place.

Jonathan Roberson (85-84), Ryan Keller (85-86), Zachary Cutler (88-87) and Jackson Lane (92-86) were the other Wolves' state qualifiers.

Columbia Rock Bridge won the Class 4 team title with a score of 614. Rockhurst and Francis Howell were tied for second with 631.
