Holt Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With Shutout Win Over Lindbergh

Junior Dami Akano bangs in rebound for only goal in 1-0 Indians win over the Flyers.

HOLT HIGH SCHOOL – The boys soccer team enjoyed what might have been its best night of the 2011 season Thursday night, as the Indians first honored its eight graduating seniors and their parents with a pregame thank-you celebration, then went out and beat red-hot , 1-0, in the last game of the regular season for both teams.

Holt came into the night with a disappointing 5-12 record, but looked like one of the best defensive teams in the area, in holding off an explosive Lindbergh squad that fired off 17 shots at Indian goalkeeper Brad Fahs.

The Flyers were on the charge all night and throughout seemed just moments away from breaking through and finding the back of the net.

But Fahs and his mates were just fantastic, denying Lindbergh at every turn, including somehow shutting down the more than 10 corner kicks the Flyers had on the night.

The senior keeper, who was the first player honored during Holt’s Senior Night pregame celebration, gave a hint of what was to come when he stopped a point-blank Lindbergh shot in the game’s opening minutes.

From that moment on, it seemed Fahs had no intentions on letting Lindbergh score.

The Indian offense was stymied for much of the night, but it did break through for a brilliant scoring chance midway through the first half.

After a turnover, Holt somehow managed to get a 2-on-1 through the box, just to the right of the Lindbergh net, senior Erik Peyton fired a shot on goal, but Flyer goalkeeper Blake Brockhaus got a hand on the ball and denied the chance.

Fortunately for Holt, junior Dami Akano was all alone in front for the rebound, which he banged home for his first goal of the season, to give the Indians the lead.

After that, neither team could score despite numerous chances, allowing Holt a magnificent win over a Lindbergh team that had won six of its previous seven contests.

Both teams will now head into district play, which begins all over the state on Saturday.
