Notebook: Ex-Timberland Grad McDonald Shining at Mizzou, Plus Holt and THS Updates

Missouri redshirt freshman and 2009 Timberland graduate Alex McDonald is excelling at the shot put for the Tigers' track team.

University of Missouri-Columbia redshirt freshman and 2009 graduate Alex McDonald is excelling at the shot put for the Tigers’ track and field team this spring.

McDonald placed fourth last weekend (March 19) at the Central Methodist Open with a throw of 14.34m (47-0 ¾). The winning throw in the meet came from sophomore Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.), with a throw of 17.07m (56-0).

McDonald’s personal-best shot put toss of 17.78m (58-4) came while he was at Timberland, and he won the Missouri state title in 2009 in the discus with a throw of 57.96m (190-2). He sat out last season at Mizzou while recovering from surgery to repair torn cartilage in the socket of his throwing shoulder.

At Timberland, McDonald was twice named first-team all-state and, as a senior, was ranked No. 18 nationally in the discus. He earned all-conference in the GAC North Conference in both the shot put and discus in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons for coach Cary Eldredge.

The Tigers’ next home meet is April 1. To follow the track and field team and McDonald’s progress, you can visit MUTigers.com.

The Timberland baseball team (3-2) has won their past three games, and will host its home opener next Wednesday against St. Dominic at 4:30 p.m. The Wolves now play in the GAC South Conference after winning the GAC North title last year. Senior infielder David Masters is 9-for-19 at the plate with a team-high 8 RBI.

The baseball team is also 3-2. The Indians’ next outing is at home against Festus on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. Senior outfielder-pitcher Conner Hales is 10-for-19 batting this season while teammates senior outfielder Cody Bishop (.438) and senior infielder-pitcher Nolan Fisher (.545) lead Holt with 7 RBI apiece. Junior catcher Nate Giessmann is batting .571 and leads the team with 10 runs scored.
