University of Missouri-Columbia redshirt freshman and 2009 graduate Alex McDonald is excelling at the shot put for the Tigers’ track and field team this spring.
McDonald placed fourth last weekend (March 19) at the Central Methodist Open with a throw of 14.34m (47-0 ¾). The winning throw in the meet came from sophomore Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.), with a throw of 17.07m (56-0).
McDonald’s personal-best shot put toss of 17.78m (58-4) came while he was at Timberland, and he won the Missouri state title in 2009 in the discus with a throw of 57.96m (190-2). He sat out last season at Mizzou while recovering from surgery to repair torn cartilage in the socket of his throwing shoulder.
At Timberland, McDonald was twice named first-team all-state and, as a senior, was ranked No. 18 nationally in the discus. He earned all-conference in the GAC North Conference in both the shot put and discus in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons for coach Cary Eldredge.
