Rascals Take Two of Three From Southern

Late loss Sunday ruins hopes of a sweep.

The River City Rascals were within one out of sweeping a series in Marion, IL for the first time on Sunday night.    

But a ninth-inning walkoff homer by Sam Wiley gave the Southern Illinois Miners a 5-3 win before 3,003 at Rent One Park.    

The Rascals (35-15) won the first two games of the series 7-0, 9-5 and still lead the Miners by three games in the battle for first place in the Western Division of the Frontier League.

Joash Brodin homered in the fourth to give the Rascals a 3-2 lead. But River City left-handed closer Kirkland Rivers was unable to nail down the win in the ninth.    

The blown save was only the second by the River City bullpen all season.

River City All-Star pitcher Zack Sterner allowed just seven hits and two runs over the first seven innings. Derrick Miramontes pitched a scoreless eighth inning.    

The Rascals, who had won their last three games, scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.    

Southern Illinois (32-18) entered the league in 2007 and had won at least one game in each of the 10 previous series with the Rascals at home.    

River City travels to Normal to begin a three-game set with the Cornbelters on Monday.
