Cooler Weather May Draw Crowds to St. Charles' Festival of the Little Hills

Annual St. Charles festival runs Aug. 17 through 19 in Main Street and Frontier Park.

Warm weather—but not the brutally hot temperatures we've experienced this summer—is expected for the 41st in St. Charles, scheduled for Aug. 17-19.

Temperatures are expected to top out at 81°F on Friday, 79°F on Saturday and 83°F on Sunday.

Attendance at the annual craft festival typically ranges from 250,000 to 300,000 people over the weekend and weather often plays a role in turn out.

In 2009, the unseasonably cool weather meant attendance surged to 350,000 people. Organizers said some food vendors ran out of bread and soda products halfway through.

"Looks like it's going to be one of our best weather years yet," said Event Chairman Dale Hampton, who has been involved with the festival for the past 26 years.

Festival volunteers are getting set up this week in Frontier Park. Main Street will close between Boone's Lick Road and Monroe from 5 a.m. Aug. 17 to 7 p.m. Aug. 19.

Parking will be tight close to Main Street and Frontier Park.

Organizers are providing shuttles from four different locations that depart every 10-20 minutes. Plan to park at one of these spots and shuttle over: , 2250 Elm Street, , 3601 Droste, Chuck E. Cheese, 2669 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Streets of St. Charles, I-70 and Fifth Street.

Hampton said they are struggling to let people know there will be no parking at the Family Arena this year.

The festival will feature 342 crafters from across the country who will set up along Main Street and in Frontier Park. Local nonprofit organizations will sell fair food that ranges from ice cream to lemonade to brats and more.

Musicians will perform on the Main Stage in Frontier Park throughout the duration of the fair. Hampton said they decided to cut back on the entertainment by inviting St. Charles County groups rather than bands from the St. Louis region. Serapis will play Friday at 8:30 p.m. and Blues Racket performs at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
