Moms Talk Round-Up: Keeping Up with the Kids

Summer camps, balancing schedules and should children listen to music with bad lyrics?

Each week, our Patch sites ask area moms, dads and grandparents to chip in on questions posed by mom councils in Moms Talk. This past week, parents discussed the end of school and the beginning of summer, as well as handling that racket of music. Camping Out: What criteria did you use to select a summer camp? At what age should children begin to attend camp? Martha Baur wrote: “My 10-year-old is going to sleep-away camp in North Carolina for two weeks. My 7-year-old wants to be like her big sister and go to sleep-away camp, so she's going to Cub Creek -- a darling animal camp in Rolla for a week. Close to home, but she is getting a sense of independence. Here in St. Louis, my youngest is going to Ackermann's Swim Camp in Kirkwood. It's two…

Moms Talk Round-Up: Saying No, Summer Planning and Worried Kids

Plus, the age-old question, when to Tweet or not to Tweet?

Each week, our Patch sites ask area moms, dads and grandparents to chip in on questions posed by mom councils in Moms Talk. Last week, St. Louis area parents sounded off on children and social media, accepting the word “no,” fears, and planning. No Means No: How do you handle children who won't take "no" for an answer? Haley Morgan wrote: Telling your kids "no" is one of the biggest gifts you can give your children, and I think one of the hardest things to do as a parent. I have always told them that it is my job to tell them “no” sometimes because I love them. If they in turn tell me I am the meanest Mom ever, then I simply respond with a smile, " I must be a good Mom. Thank You." I think we often fall prey to wanting to make our kids …

I 100% agree with Tamara. I have a rule with youngest son's father that all toys purchased (with exception of say a McD's toy) at his house, must stay at his house and vice versa. And same as Tamara... if he forgets this rule, I am NOT responsible for if it gets broken or lost at my house. My husband have the same rule with his children from his first marriage as well. It works great. And again, …   more ›

Moms Talk Round-Up: Talking and Learning with Children

Parents faced some tough discussions including bullying, explaining bad news and school lunches.

Each week, our Patch sites ask area moms, dads and grandparents to chip in on questions posed by mom councils in Moms Talk. This week, area parents took on various topics of bullying, explaining tough news and those unhealthy school lunches. Positive Reinforcement: How do you handle tough news? Alison White wrote: I always want to try to answer my daughter’s questions honestly, but I don't want to tell them too much because at the age of 5, I think that they should look at the world through rose-colored glasses. I have explained in 5-year-old terms that, yes, some natural disasters could affect us, but I also explain how we would react, what our plan would be. We actually set up a family plan for what to do if there were to be a fire or …

Moms Talk Round-Up: Spring Break, Potty Training and Sex Talks

Oh, and when’s the right time to teach your kids responsible drinking?

Each week, our Patch sites ask area moms, dads and grandparents to chip in on questions posed by mom councils in Moms Talk. Local parents have discussed around the St. Louis region a range of topics this week from rainy day vacations to sex. Doh for our dears on rainy days? What activities do you plan for rainy vacation days? Laura Falk wrote: The Magic House is one of our favorite rainy day activities. The 2-year-old also loves going out to the Whittle Train Store in Valley Park for a morning of playing with trains. I'm also still consistently amazed at how long the kiddos will be engaged with simple things like Play-Doh or paints. — In Clayton-Richmond Heights/Ladue-Frontenac.
