Three candidates are vying to fill the Ward 2 spot on the Wentzville City Council that will be vacated by Councilman Vann Sample. The councilman opted not to seek re-election. The election is Tuesday. Another candidate has thrown his hat into the ring for Wentzville’s mayoral race. Darrel Lackey filed before the deadline Tuesday to become the fourth candidate in the April 3 election. He will run against former alderman Bill Schuette, Ward 3 Alderman Nick Guccione and Ward 1 Alderman Leon Tow, who also is board president. For the first time, the mayor will serve a four-year term. Previously, the position was a two-year term. Michael Hays also withdrew from the Ward 3 alderman race. His withdrawal puts incumbent Rick Stokes at the top position on the ballot. Stokes is challenged by Rodney E. (Rod) Stratman and Curtis T. Davis. The city’s ballot will not be certified until Tuesday. Assuming all other candidates are certified, the ballot …

The St. Charles Community College (SCC) Board of Trustees approved the filing dates for the April 3, 2012 election at its Monday night meeting. Two six-year terms and one two-year term on the SCC Board of Trustees are on the ballot. The terms up for election are currently held by: Six-Year Terms Two-Year Term SCC Board of Trustees Candidate Requirements: Interested candidates must file between Dec. 13 and Jan. 17 at the Office of the President, Room 2104, Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building at St. Charles Community College, 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Dr. in Cottleville. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Before the St. Charles County Council voted on the smoke-free ballot issue on Monday, several people addressed the council regarding the proposal. St. Charles County Council members defeated the proposal to put the smoke-free issue on the November 2012 ballot. Following are some excerpts from what residents said. Some council members support the bill that would allow voters to decide on a countywide smoking ban in August 2012, while others oppose the ban’s exemptions and say the county council should decide on the issue.
St. Charles County Council introduced a bill at Monday night’s meeting that, if approved, will allow residents to vote on a countywide smoking ban in the August 7, 2012 election. The ban would prohibit smoking in most indoor and some outdoor places throughout the county, allowing for exemptions for private clubs with no paid employees, tobacco stores or cigar bars and casinos. In an earlier interview with Patch, Joe Cronin, R-District 1, who proposed the bill, said he included the casino exemption to gain support from the council. He also said Illinois lost money to St. Louis County casinos when the state banned smoking without exemptions. Cronin doesn’t want to put any of the county casino’s 1,600 jobs at risk, he said.
